Safety in Hockey

Moccasin Musings
In 1959, on November 1st, Montreal Canadien Jacques Plante became the first NHL goaltender to wear a full face mask. After many cuts and stitches on his face, he developed a face mask. It was simply a safety issue and Plante wore his mask from then on. A few seasons later, his idea began to catch on, and soon almost every keeper in the league wore a mask. You can see Jacques' mask in the Hockey Hall of Fame located in Toronto, Canada.
