Hurricane Sandy in Canada

 Moccasin Musings
Hurricane Sandy brought  fierce winds and pelting rain to southern Ontario and Quebec. The Maritimes suffered lots of rain. All of which ended Tuesday.Moccasin Musings
The hurricane left 150,000 customers without power in Ontario, 50,000 in the dark in Quebec and 14,000 in Nova Scotia.
High winds as high as 100km/h continued to buffet southern Ontario and Quebec.
North Eastern Ontario was hit by snow, mixed with ice pellets, and freezing rain driven by winds up to 60 km/h.
Only one fatality was reported by Wednesday.

Seize The Moment

Moccasin Musings
On this day in history, October 31st, 1963, The Beatles, enjoying a raging Beatlemania epidemic in Britain, were at Heathrow Airport, London, returning from a triumphant tour of Sweden.  Also at that airport was American television impresario Ed Sullivan who witnessed the excitement.  Upon his return to America, Ed Sullivan made queries of The Beetles manager and the American sweep was launched.
Ever watchful Moccasins drum the song John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote explicitly tailored to break into the American market: "I Want To Hold Your Hand"!

Moccasin Musing takes note, Perfect Storm was one day later…

Moccasin Musings
On this day, in 1991, the so-called "perfect storm" hit the North Atlantic producing remarkably large waves along the New England and Canadian coasts.  This arrival in 1991 is one day later than  Hurricane Sandy (aka Frankenstorm) yesterday.
The 1991 Perfect Storm spread its fury over the ocean off the coast of the U.S. and Canada. The fishing boat Andrea Gail and its six-member crew were lost in that storm. A book and a movie were made out of the tragedy. Sadly, history repeated itself this year with Sandy when tall ship The Bounty was dashed in the shoals of Sandy and two members of the crew were lost at sea.
Moccasins tromp out signals of regret and empathy with all that are affect by these two storms.

Moccasins muse about the Great Depression…

Moccasin Musings
Today - October 29, but in 1929, saw the stock market crash!  This day, known as Black Tuesday, marked the beginning of the Great Depression.  Moccasins walked a long lonely trail during that one which lasted a decade.
Blowing of whistles and drumming of drums announced another big event on this day but in 1960:  Olympian Cassius Clay fought his first professional fight; during his career he would become Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World three times.

A look at what happened today in history.

Moccasin Musings
Today - October 25th, but in 1944, the first Kamikaze suicide bombers flew
out of Japan in a mission to attack WWII warships in the Philippines. Over
the remaining course of the war 5000 Kamikazes managed to sink 34 ships- costly to both sides. We’re taking off our 1812 Rabbit Fur Aviator Hats in sadness over that event in history.
On the brighter side, in 1881 Maria Picasso gave birth to a son: Pablo. Our
Ace Fur Hats are off and our mittens and gloves are clapping for that, the
birth of a genius.
We missed a big one yesterday: on October 24th, 1901, for publicity 63-
year-old Annie Taylor rolled over the Niagara Falls in a wooden pickle
barrel and lived to tell about it! Ace Fur Hats go off for this gal too - for
sheer nerve!

Lily of the Mohawks

Moccasin Musings
We’re putting our mittens together at Moccasin Musings for the Lily of the Mohawks (1656-1680) Kateri Tekakwitha, now Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.  Kateri is the first Native Americian to be canonized as a Saint in the Catholic Church.  She was known for here purity and piety and her miracles of healing.  A victim of a small pox purge that took both of her parents, Kateri survived but was disfigured.  After her death, at the side of Jesuits in the mission village of Kahnawake, the pock marks on her face disappeared and her beauty returned.
Kahnawake is located not far from Wendaki where our MarieShoes moccasins are made.

Moccasin Musings recognizes “Persons Day” in Canada

Moccasin Musings
October 18, 1929, Canadian women were finally declared Persons in Canada, by the English ‘Judicial Committee of the Imperial Privy Council’ (known at that time as the “court of last resort”).  This decision allowed women ‘now declared persons’ to sit in the Canadian Senate.
Happy Persons Day Canadian women!

Waste Reduction on Moccasin Trails

 Moccasin Musings
Moccasin trails at Home, at Work, at School are the sites for working toward reducing waste by 20%.  The week of October 15 to 21 annually is set aside to draw attention to and encourage people to rethink how they consume and what they throw away.  We are posing the question to ourselves and to our readers: will you reduce the size of your garbage tin?  At work or in your school: can you bring a “litter-free’' lunch?  Let’s all get on the Moccasin Trail, especially this week!!

Moccasins Hit the Pavement

Moccasin Musings
Along with many other communities in North America, at 8:00 am, October 18th, Marie Shoes.com Moccasins will hit the Pavement participating in the Homeless Count.   Each year, as part of the Homeless Action Plan, volunteers hit the streets with a goal of identifying the actual number of homeless people ‘living on the streets’ in their particular town.  This information helps create awareness, a connection with the people living on the streets, and measuring change.  The goal is to use the information to enhance current programs and develop new shelters and services for homeless people.  Our moccasins will be part of this positive community endeavour.
